2. TheNature of Habits

welcome back tobreaking habits. Part two, the nature of habits in this part, we'll beexploring how habits get formed and the difference between good ones, bad onesand addictions.

What really ourbad habits, how did they get formed? It's not like there's a list somewhere, you know of. These are the things that you're doing that are bad habits. Forsome people, their internet usage is a bad habit for other people. It doesn'tfeel like that at all. So. It's really subjective and it's down to what we feelhas some power over us that we wish it didn't have.

I think that's areally big thing. Is it disrupting in your life in a way to where you feel kindof powerless around it and how they get formed? You know, this is such a. Bigthing, because I think the whole world looks at habits. Like they're a sign ofweakness. Like they're a flaw, like they're a problem.

And of coursethey create problems. You know, we don't like them, but habits are formed outof wisdom. Habits are formed out of our mind, our brain doing the best it canto help us feel like ourselves again. So when we feel some level of discomfortwhen something's going wrong and we don't like it, we are designed, we, humanbeings are designed to find a way to get back to our home base, to our defaultstate of peace and clarity.

And. Sometimesthe only thing we can see are the things we stumble upon are not good for us.And then those become a habit. So like in, in Linda's story one night she justtook a few drinks and her brain said, Whoa, look at this, you feel a lot betternow. And it paired those two things together, alcohol and feeling better.

And I think it'sthat simple. Like that's how it always works. We stumble upon something thathelps us feel closer to home. And then we equate that thing with our peace andour wellbeing and our freedom. And that's kind of the misunderstanding, youknow, is that that's that thing, whatever it is, that habit is not bringing usour wellbeing and our freedom, the way that it appears,

what is thedifference between bad habits and addictions? I don't really think there's muchof a difference habits and addictions can both have a physical component, buteven when they have a physical component, it's still our understanding of that. And our reaction to that physical component that has a stuck or not stuck, youknow?

So even if wesay nicotine is an addictive substance yes. But people feel nicotine withdrawaland they don't act on it. They find the ability to not act on that, to notsmoke when they feel that and that feeling, that association, the physicaladdiction, it, it goes away. So I don't see much of a difference in really kindof down to earth, practical looking at it.

What's thedifference between bad habits and good habits. We don't complain about goodhabits. I think it's that simple. We all have a million good habits. Right. Andwe take them for granted, as we tend to do as humans of things that we likewe've taken for granted, we don't give it much thought they run in thebackground.

We brush ourteeth every day. We do all of our, we feed our children. You know, we do all ofour good habits. And we don't give them a second thought and our bad habits geta ton of our attention, which by the way is part of why they're so hard tochange and why they look like such problems is they just get a lot moreattention than the yeah.
