On Monday the 28th of October, 2013, at around 3:45pm, a frantic 999 call was placed to the London Ambulance Service in regards to a 6-year-old child who was not breathing and turning blue. Her parents screamed at the operator to hurry, insisting that they had no idea what had happened. This final episode follows on from part one, and the events that occurred after Ellie’s death, including the shocking revelations that proved complete and utter failure by all authorities involved. This episode contains details of child abuse resulting in murder that many people will find distressing. Listener discretion is advised. Over the years, many stories of parents being separated from their children due to baseless allegations have continued to make breaking news. For those people, being reunited with their children is the end of an unimaginable nightmare, where life can finally resume, and serious lessons can be learned. It appeared that this had tragically happened again in November 2012, when Ben Butler began a relentless media campaign to win back custody of his daughter Ellie. Despite clearing his name against allegations of abuse, Ellie still hadn’t been returned to his care, and members of the British public had nothing but sympathy for the circumstances he’d found himself in. Unfortunately, authorities began pandering to Ben in fear of repercussions from the general public. The true, horrific extent of what was really happening behind the façade, would not be revealed until it was too late. At around 8:30am, on Sunday the 26th of August 2012, Mark Bretz was making his way home after delivering cows to the local meat market. It was a beautiful morning, and he was looking forward to getting back to his family, so they could all head to church. As he continued along Ohio 208, passing through the remote, grassy intersection of Keyes and Steel Hill roads, he noticed something lying in the middle of the road. At first, he assumed it was an animal, and prepared himself to swerve around it. It was only as he got closer, that he realised it was actually the body of a woman. Nikki Cross tucked her two young children into bed on the evening of September 14th 2015. Her husband was working away from home, so she had the whole house to herself. She began to relax when she was suddenly disturbed by noises outside. There she discovered an unknown male peering through the window, before he began pounding on the door, demanding to be let inside. Just minutes later, the man smashed his way inside of the home, armed with two knives. Nikki did everything she could to protect her two sleeping children, and her husband, 200 miles away and totally helpless, horrifyingly listened to everything on the other end of Nikki’s phone.
