Gene gets a crash-course in parenting in this week's group-commissioned Jim Carrey hit from 1997, "Liar Liar." Ash cautions against Disneyworld Dads and helicopter parents, while Big D makes the case that falsehoods make the world go 'round. This uber-informative episode of Shat The Movies also explores the world of lawyering, age-of-consent laws, gas safety, anesthesia protocol and when it's OK to treat kids as adults. The Shat Crew also debates Jim Carrey's use of physical comedy and learns an important lesson: Marriage is what you don't say. Ash and Gene ditch the third wheel this week for a romantic stroll along the River Thames and up to "Notting Hill," where they sing along to '90s English ballads, discuss meeting celebrities, and rediscover the magic of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Shat The Movies commissioner Will commissioned this episode for his British wife, and we sincerely apologize for ruining it by nitpicking why a bookstore owner would carry bad books, why the hair and makeup crew had to go so hard, why people don't appreciate being able to see boobs whenever they want, and why Alec Baldwin was even in this movie. Shat The Movies loves a good horror movie, and all three hosts were thrilled when listener Robert in Germany commissioned "Event Horizon." This 1997 space freak-out film combined sci-fi and infernal themes with performances from Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, leaving the entire Shat Crew changed. In this episode, Big D points out filmmakers were entirely too optimistic on Earthlings' space-faring timeline. Gene accuses "Event Horizon" of being an "Alien" ripoff, and Ash cheers the concept of a haunted house in space. Remember the paper-and-pencil demo of how to fold space-time? The Latin recording with the cannibal orgy? Who could forget! And the jump scares are top-notch, even if a few are a little forced. "Event Horizon" was a landmark film for so many of us '80s and '90s kids, but does it still hold its place among the spooky greats? Listen and find out. After "Wayne's World" scored a near perfect 0.25 Wipe Score, the Shat Crew was drooling over the prospect of covering Mike Myers' follow-up flop with a knockout supporting cast: "So I Married An Axe Murderer." Ash loved it as a kid, and it inspired Gene to perform beat poetry. But Big D has always kept the movie at arm's length. In this episode, we examine the 1993 romantic black comedy and reminisce about '90s music, coffee shop culture, shabby chic home decor, handsy moms, Alan Arkin's genius, and whether Mike Myers makes Adam Sandler seem romantic. The Shat Crew also discusses trust in relationships, appropriate honeymoon destinations, whether Charlie even deserves Harriet, and whether Mike Myers can act when he isn't wearing a costume. Two old friends of the podcast return this week for Shat The Movies' take on "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka": Black Girl Couch commissioned the 1988 blaxploitation parody, and The King Bee is our guest host. Keenan Ivory Wayans' directorial debut led us to question the reality of the blaxploitation metaverse, declare every person's right to lampoon their own race, celebrate a knockout cast and determine that Damon is the least funny Wayans brother. In this episode, the Shat Crew also discusses a black Ryan Reynolds, whether wigs count as lying, whether Gene goes wild when Ash is gone, the comedic power of giant hats, Gene's first fart joke, suicide by soup and choosing your beating. Shat The Movies is no stranger to film adaptations of Stephen King books, but this is the first one Big D has actually read. "Needful Things" combines the unexpected star power of Ed Harris and Max von Sydow with the unexpected bosom of Bonnie Bedelia to bring us a movie with a devilishly good premise and abysmal special effects. Gene felt "Needful Things" was more Muppet movie than a genuine horror flick. Ash begged all the characters to install alarm systems, and Big D pointed out the missing reveal that really would have brought the whole tale home. In the end, the Shat Crew agreed the film simply had to be intended as a horror-comedy. In this episode, we also discuss: what "needful thing" each Shat The Movies co-host would choose, how the movie did Nettie dirty, materialism, hypocrisy, the slowest cop ever, easily convinced townsfolk who all happen to be trained stunt performers, and how to properly blow up a church. We're celebrating Hot Sauce Steve's birthday with the 1998 hit that marked Adam Sandler's transition to romantic comedies: "The Wedding Singer." In many ways, "The Wedding Singer" was a sign of things to come for Sandler: co-starring with a possibly concussed Drew Barrymore, more subdued roles, nostalgia and mom-safe jokes. But there were still flashes of the Saturday Night Live legend we saw in "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore": the 90ish-minute runtime, the non-sequiturs, and the cameos. Weddings are the topic of the week in this episode, with the Shat Crew discussing pre-wedding jitters, the cost of weddings, and how much of a role the groom should play. We also discuss Adam Sandler's singing, whether Linda got a bad rap, what constitutes cheating, and how well we can spot a freak in the sheets when we seem her in the streets. To top it all off, Ving Rhames calls in to discuss "Blood In Blood Out" and Big D gets passionate about vanilla ice cream. Can you really call yourself a retro movies podcast without reviewing the epic '80s film flop that refuses to die? At long last, Shat The Movies is digging its glaive into "Krull." On paper, this movie should have been the next "Star Wars." It has a massive budget, plush set design, a rousing James Horner musical score, freakin' lasers, a handsome lead, a strong princess, a wise mentor, mystical powers, an impenetrable stronghold, galactic consequences, a legendary weapon and Liam Neeson. But "Krull" showed just how hard it is to bring fantasy concepts to the silver screen. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses how the "Krull" movie posters misled Big D, how less is more when it comes to special effects, why thieves and brawlers are so eager to join perilous quests, why geography matters in movies, and whether "Krull" delivered the worst action scenes in Shat The Movies history. "Blood In Blood Out" didn't just open our eyes to an undiscovered crime epic, this 1993 drama changed the way Gene talks, the way Big D watches film, and the way Ash plots her stabbings. Whether you first saw this love letter to East Los Angeles on DVD or through a mayonnaise-smeared YouTube screen, "Blood In Blood Out" hit you hard with its graphic violence, unexpected laughs, promising cast, and surprise sexuality. The action wasn't exactly "Heat," but it sure was fun to watch. And who could forget those plot twists spanning a three-hour runtime? It was like The Chicano Godfather. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses who would last longest in prison, how far family obligations go, and whether Damian Chapa ruined the movie or was the only man alive who could play Miklo Velka. When listener Kev commissioned 1990's "Nuns on the Run," we were ready for a Shat The Movies sleeper hit. Monty Python's Eric Idle and Harry Potter's Hagrid together in a comedy about the English mob and religious orders sounds like a recipe for success. But sometimes too many cooks spoil the broth. Gene expected another "Withnail and I." Ash wanted something different from "Sister Act," and Big D wanted a romantic montage that lasted longer and meant something. We didn't get any of those things. But "Nuns on the Run" had its moments: a young Robbie Coltrane explaining the Holy Trinity, a few respectable puns, and some incredible surprise '90s boobs. We also got an overused joke about eyeglasses, an onslaught of tilted cameras and close-ups, a healthy dose of white male mediocrity, an incredibly English car chase, and surprisingly little running.
