spent nearly 13 years as a focus group moderator for media companies. I traveled the country testing television shows, talent, websites, advertising campaigns, and the like, with consumers from all walks of life. And while I learned a lot about those things, some of my biggest takeaways were actually major life lessons that have shaped who I am. In today's episode, I'm giving you a behind-the-scenes look at my time as a focus group moderator and sharing some of those valuable life lessons.
In her early 20’s, Lacy Gadegaard-West was traveling the country working with high profile celebrity clients as a hair stylist for the Bellagio in Las Vegas. She was loving her life and booming career, but felt the desire to turn her attention to her new family. She moved across the country to support her then husband through law school and raise her two boys, all while trying to keep a new business afloat. In the years that followed, Lacy’s journey took her through her fair share of ups and downs as she navigated being a single mom, growing her business, and a brain tumor that ultimately led to a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. In today’s episode, Lacy shares with us many of the life lessons she’s learned throughout her journey, including how her MS diagnosis gave her a second chance at life.
You may remember today’s guest from Fox 13’s So You Think You Can Dance, when she and her husband both made it on the show, and not only that, they both made it to the finals. Since then, Ashleigh Di Lello has traveled the world as a professional dancer, appearing on Broadway, Dancing with the Stars and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. But life wasn’t always spotlights and cameras for Ashleigh. In fact, dancing was completely taken away from her not once, but twice! At age 13, Ashleigh was suddenly faced with a life-threatening illness and was told she wouldn't survive past her teenage years. Her determination, resilience and faith proved doctors wrong and by 19, Ashleigh was on the dance floors again and became a nationally recognized name. Unfortunately, much of what Ashleigh experienced as a teen was something she faced yet again as an adult. But against all odds, Ashleigh persevered and overcame what doctors said was the impossible and her mission in life is to help others do the same. In today’s episode, Ashleigh talks about her 20-year journey of chronic illness and pain, how dance helped save her even when she couldn’t even get out of bed, and how she discovered that in order to fully heal the body, you also have to treat the brain. She is the creator of Bio Emotional Healing, multiple courses and coaching programs including: The Food Freedom Revolution and Turning Pain Into Purpose. She is also the host of a new podcast, Body Freedom Radio - available now on all podcast platforms.
Jeanette Bennett is the founder and editor-in-chief at Bennett Communications, parent company to Utah Valley Magazine, BusinessQ Magazine and Utah Valley Bride Magazine. She’s also moderated gubernatorial debates, numerous business panels and is a regular guest on HuffPostLive. Jeanette is one of the hardest working women and mothers I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing, and while she’s certainly seen many of the ups and downs of starting and running her own business while raising five kids, she’s always been a positive and inspiring leader in her community. Jeanette’s positivity continues to inspire her community as she has recently opened up about a new chapter in her journey - her battle against thyroid cancer. In today’s episode of “Courtney, Beyond the Cake,” Jeanette tells us about her journey so far, and how not receiving the miracle she hoped for helped her to discover the desire for the next right step. Today, as this episode launches, Jeanette actually goes into her first surgery to remove the tumors on her thyroid. Jeanette, our prayers and thoughts are you with you.
As a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist, Devrie Pettit spent years helping others find balance and feel good with meal planning and coaching. However, as Devrie planned each new meal for her clients and coached them along their wellness journey, she saw many men and women who seemed to get so focused on the number on the scale or what food was “good” and what food was “bad,” that they lost sight of what Dev was really trying to teach them, and that was: how to have a healthy relationship with food and with yourself, so that they could ultimately live and eat intuitively without being trapped by a “diet” mentality.Devrie has since stopped meal planning for clients and now focuses on nutrition therapy. In today’s episode of “Courtney, Beyond the Cake,” Devrie gives us insight into what “diet culture” is, why it can be harmful, how to break free from it, and ultimately why it’s important to even recognize it in today’s society.Dev has her Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition and Food Science from Utah State University, as well as a Master’s Degree from Stony Brook University in New York. Dev now has her own private practice here in Utah, where she coaches clients virtually and in-person, and she’s one of the Nutrition Therapist Mindful Counseling in Provo, Utah. She’s also a mom of four, a wife, a foodie, and loves to cook.
She was hoping to simply surprise a co-worker with a yummy birthday treat, but ended up falling in love with baking more than she ever imagined, and now has over a million followers on Instagram, hundreds of thousands of subscribers on YouTube, and partnerships with well-known companies like The Food Network. Today, on “Courtney, Beyond the Cake,” my friend and fellow cake lover, Chelsey White from Chelsweets takes us along her journey in the kitchen and how she went from hobby cake baking to leaving corporate America and turning cakes into her full-time job.
At the end of 2018, I launched a cake subscription service, "Courtney's Cake Club." As a member of the club, you'd receive premeasured and prepackaged ingredients for one of my cakes, along with easy-to-follow instructions for how to make each one. I was even doing exclusive videos for club members and had partnered with some awesome brands to add surprises in the boxes each month.By the middle of 2019, the cake boxes were being featured in O Magazine, Hallmark Home and Family TV, Entrepreneur.com, and The Today Show. It was a dream come true! But behind-the-scenes, things weren't looking as good as they did on the screen and on pages in magazines. We hit problem after problem and the decision to go all-in or pull-out was constantly hanging over my head.In today's episode, I'm sharing the cake box journey
She’s known for her delicious Swiss Meringue buttercream, creative cakes like her London Fog Cake, and two cookbooks full of decadent desserts and easy to follow how-to’s. But Tessa Huff wasn’t always a lover of cakes. In fact, she didn’t even like baking when she was growing up. She was too busy dancing! It wasn’t until she was nearing the end of college and took a job in the school’s bakery that she started to fall in love with making sweets treats. From there, she taught herself the ins and outs of cake making, opened up her very own bakery, became a widely popular blogger, an author of two cookbooks, and a mother of two.Today on Courtney Beyond the Cake we hear how this Southern California dancer became the well-known baker she is today.
